Ask AI for a summary of this article

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, your brand is named inside the answers AI assistants write. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Claude for the best supplier of what you sell, you are either in the answer or you are not, and the result is decided before anyone sees a list of links.

It is a different measurement from a ranking. A ranking describes a position on a results page. AI visibility describes presence inside a written answer, where there is no page one and no page two, and where three or four names are usually all a reader gets. This guide sets out what AI visibility is, what it is made of, how to measure it and what actually moves it.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is the share of relevant AI answers in which your brand is named, cited or linked. It has three parts worth separating, because they behave differently.

Presence is whether you appear at all for a question your business should own. Accuracy is whether what the model says about you is correct: the right services, the right locations, the right prices, the right claims. Position is where in the answer you sit, since a brand named first in a recommendation carries far more weight than one in a closing aside.

A brand can score well on one and badly on another. Being named in every answer with the wrong opening hours is an AI visibility problem as real as not being named at all.

Why AI visibility is not the same as SEO

Traditional search rewards the page that best matches a query. Generative search rewards the source an assistant trusts enough to repeat. The second depends on things ranking alone never measured.

Assistants assemble answers from several sources at once, so a single excellent page matters less than a consistent story told across your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, review platforms and any publication that has written about you. They work from retrieved text rather than rendered pages, so content that only appears after JavaScript runs is often invisible to them. They prefer sources that state facts plainly, because a sentence that answers the question directly is easy to quote and a paragraph of marketing language is not.

The practical effect is that a site can rank respectably in Google and still be absent from AI answers for the same question.

How to measure AI visibility

Measurement is the part most businesses skip, and it is the part that makes everything afterwards decidable.

Start with the questions. Write the twenty or thirty questions a real buyer asks before choosing a supplier in your category, in their own words, including the ones that name a town or a city. These are your prompts, and they are not the same as your keyword list.

Then ask them. Put each question to the assistants your customers actually use, and record three things for every answer: whether you were named, what was said about you, and who was named instead. The pattern matters more than any single answer, because models vary their wording between runs.

Then score it. Count the share of your prompt set in which you appear, note how often a named competitor appears in your place, and mark every factual error in what was said about you. Repeat on a fixed schedule, monthly for most businesses, so that movement can be attributed to work rather than to chance.

Our AI Visibility Checker runs that cycle for you: it tracks how often your brand is cited in AI answers, shows where a competitor is named instead, and sets out the content gaps keeping you out of the summaries.

What actually moves AI visibility

Four things do most of the work, and they are ordinary.

Answer the question in the first screen. Each page that should be cited needs to state its answer in plain sentences before any persuasion begins. Assistants quote the sentence that resolves the question, so write it as a sentence that can stand alone.

Make your entity unambiguous. Name, address, phone number, services and locations should match everywhere they appear, on the site, in schema, on the Business Profile and on every directory. Contradictory facts give a model a reason to prefer a source it finds more reliable.

Serve your content without JavaScript. If the answer only exists after a script runs, assume it will not be read. Server-rendered HTML, a clean sitemap, and crawler directives that allow answering crawlers are the baseline.

Earn third party corroboration. A fact repeated on a site you do not control is stronger evidence than the same fact on your own. Mentions, listings and coverage all feed the same judgement.

How long it takes

Expect movement in weeks rather than days. Assistants refresh their view of a brand at different rates, and a correction you publish today may take a full crawl cycle before it shows up in an answer. Accuracy problems usually resolve fastest, because they depend on a single contradicted fact. Presence in a competitive category takes longer, because it depends on corroboration you have to build.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI visibility the same as AEO or GEO?

Close, but not identical. AEO and GEO describe the work: optimising content so answer engines can read, trust and cite it. AI visibility describes the result: how often that work gets you named. One is the method, the other is the measurement.

Can I check my AI visibility for free?

You can do it by hand. Write your buyer's real questions, put them to two or three assistants, and record who gets named. That costs nothing but time, and it is enough to tell you whether you have a problem. A tool becomes worth it when you need the same prompts tracked repeatedly so you can see change over time.

Does ranking first in Google guarantee I appear in AI answers?

No. A strong ranking helps, because many assistants draw on search results, but it does not decide the outcome. Pages that bury the answer, sites that render only in the browser, and brands whose facts disagree across the web are all regularly left out of answers they would expect to win.

What should I fix first?

The factual contradictions. They are the cheapest to correct, they affect every answer at once, and leaving them in place undermines everything else you do.

Where to start

Measure before you change anything. A recorded baseline of who gets named for your buyer's real questions turns AI visibility from an anxiety into a list of specific fixes, and it is the only way to tell afterwards whether the work paid.

If you want that baseline without building the process yourself, start with the AI Visibility Checker.
